WENT TO ST CATHARINES, ONTARIO FOR MY MOTHER'S FUNERAL

overcast 10 °C

After a full and happy life my Mother died in her own bed. It was my privilege and a great honour for me to be there with so many others from the four generations who survive her.

QUESNEL BC FOR MAKENZIE'S FOURTH BIRTHDAY OCT 18,2010

LUCKY GREAT GRANDPA CELEBRATING WITH THE KIDS

sunny 10 °C

I've been keeping as busy as possible and that includes flying to Quesnel again. This time I went for great granddaughter Makenzie's fourth birthday and did we ever have fun. Her mother Andrea arranged for a pool side party so we swam, splashed and played with all the water toys. Back at daughter Melinda and son-in-law Wayne's home they were having some trees removed which added to the excitement. Anyway the pictures tell the story.

NEW YORK CITY, THE BIG APPLE, GOTHAM-SEPTEMBER 8-11, 2010

FOURTH ANNUAL TRIP TO NYC WITH MY DAUGHTER HEATHER

sunny 25 °C

Once again we had a wonderful time with beautiful weather and great food and drink. Our routine is to check in to the New York Hilton about midnight, have a cheese plate and wine at MAISON and walk around Times Square. The next morning we walked down Broadway to New York University stopping for a coffee break before taking a cab to the half price ticket booth in Brooklyn where we got tickets to BILLY ELLIOTT. Then we walked the PROMENADE on Brooklyn's waterfront with its terrific skyline and Statue of Liberty view. Next we walked across Brooklyn Bridge on the board walk. It is spectacular. After a quick peak at the World Trade Centre site we walked up West Broadway window shopping and people watching. Had lunch in The Cosmopolitan Hotel ,then kept on walking and finally took a cab back to our hotel in order to rest up for the theatre. Actually enjoyed all the hubbub of the streets more than the musical.
The next day was Central Park day. So we walked up Fifth Avenue to Central Park, cut over to Madison(what a great street) where we shopped, stopped for coffee and just enjoyed ourselves. We went over to Fifth Avenue to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to buy a poster from a street vendor, then went up to The Guggenheim Museum where Heather bought a hat. Next we walked through the park and had lunch at La Lo Restaurant on 83rd( I think) near Amsterdam(part of a Meg Ryan movie was shot there).Walked to Broadway, took a cab to Times Square, stood in line at their half-price ticket booth and got tickets to Mama Mia-----my third time and Heather's second---WHAT A SHOW!
So that's a typical daughter/father New York trip for us and do we ever enjoy it. In addition we had two fantastic dinners at the magnificent Venetian REMI RESTAURANT around the corner from the HILTON and also dropped in there for drinks a couple of times too. The Museum of Modern Art and Radio City Music Hall are in the neighbourhood and we stopped at the museum's gift shop. You can't go to NYC without shopping can you?

FIVE GENERATIONAL VISIT AUGUST 14-22, 2010

Chicago, Toronto and St Catharines

sunny 25 °C

I thought it was time to visit my 103 year old Mother. So son Doug and I decided to have a little father/son bonding time as well. We met in Chicago, took in the air show along the Lake Michigan waterfront, cycled, went to a gym, ate, drank, talked and had a grand time. Also we took a boat trip on the Chicago River to see all the architectural wonders. And to add a little spice to the program, after we had ordered drinks and crab legs in an up scale bar the maitre d' told me, politely, that I was dressed inappropriately. I was wearing a muscle shirt. I kept quiet but my son simply asked them to come up with a solution. The result was putting on a sleeved waiter's jacket and having a good laugh.
Then we flew to Toronto(Doug's home) ate, drank and talked a lot more. I saw grandsons Chris and Geoff and went to granddaughter Shannon's house for a barbecue. She and husband Kyle did a great job and it was wonderful to see the terrific improvements they have made to their 90 or so year old home. Also saw great granddaughter Riley and her brother Spencer who was a little under the weather after a hectic day. So more cycling with Doug and his wife Linda, had lunch on Toronto Island and all in all a wonderful time.
I took Doug's Mercedes to St Catharines to visit my Mom who I found to be in fine fettle, sharp, cheerful and full of joie de vivre. Took her and sister-in-law Bev as well as nephew Bruce to Niagara on the Lake for lunch on the golf course overlooking the Niagara River. I told the women I would drive them right to the door and see that they were settled before parking the car. Well, after ordering, the hostess came and asked for my car keys as I had forgotten all about the car which was blocking the driveway. OH MY GOSH! HOW EMBARASSING. Stayed with sister-in-law Fran in Welland which I enjoy and which gives me a needed break We had a lovely dinner at The Welland Golf Club on the deck overlooking the links.Chicago.jpgChicago #4

VISITING A CATTLE RANCH, JULY 21-25TH, 2010

QUESNEL AGAIN BUT WITH A TWIST

sunny 28 °C

I'm not really into nostalgia but, and it's a BIG but, daughter Melinda arranged a visit and lunch at a local ranch owned by second generation ranchers John and Denise Trueman. It brought back many pleasant memories of a misspent summer in 1950. I quit the bank and moved to a ranch in Northern California owned by my aunt and uncle. Fortunately the Korean war broke out and I returned to the safety of Canada and the bank where I continued my life and career until retirement in 1984 when this BLOG starts. During that summer of 1950 I rode horses, helped on a cattle round-up, pulled lumber off a green chain, fought a forest fire and generally had time to think about what I wanted out of life etcetera. OH MY GOSH IT WAS A MARVELLOUS EXPERIENCE but I decided it was a banker's life for me.

Fast forward sixty years and here I was on a ranch in The Cariboo district of British Columbia.....rolling, beautiful country, cows, horses and dogs and a lovely down-to earth ranch family. John also works in a lumber mill and felled trees in his youth so we had lots to talk about.

Also went out in son-in-law Wayne's boat for a leisurely cruise of Dragon Lake which his and Melinda's house faces. Granddaughter Andrea and her kids visited and we had a great and very relaxed time.
