ROME, AVIGNON AND AIX-EN-PROVENCE, JUNE 6-JULY 6, 2011

MUSIC, LAUGHTER, SIGHTS AND FAMILY GET-TOGETHERS

sunny 30 °C

This was my fifth trip to France since November, 2010 so I'll try not to repeat what I've already said. But there were a few twists this time. First, 'mon amour' and I met in Rome where my daughter Heather and her husband Jim were spending their first week of retirement. We had dinner with them near the Piazza Navona. The two Heathers had never met and Rome was a wonderful place for them to do so. Also my Sweetheart had never been to Rome so we took in the sights, attended an event in the Forum, went to the Vatican, walked our legs off and had a wonderful time.

Then we flew to Aix to a new apartment on rue Rifle Rafle. By new I mean new to us, the building was constructed in the 1200's. Aix is a wonderful city, the weather was perfect and we attended many concerts including modern ballet, choirs, an organ recital, opera stars performing their parts from a work by Mozart, music students and even the London Symphony Orchestra who performed on the main street,Cours Mirabeau, which had thousands of seats and as many people standing. The streets are just loaded with outdoor restaurants and despite it being lively even late at night you always feel safe. This is a university city so it's full of young people too. We also visited galleries, museums, Cezanne's family home, etcetera. And we rode electric bikes out to Mt St Victoire. If you ever attempt this remember to keep your battery charged. We didn't and these heavy bikes are not easy to peddle especially on hilly roads. Oh yes concerts are held in courtyards, churches, the cathedral, cloisters and so on. So it's really a great experience. We also spent a day in Avignon which was interesting and enjoyable visiting historic sites such as the Papal Palace, walking all over including the lakeside path with its perfect views of this lovely walled city. And when we were tired we just stretched out on the lawn before having a great meal and catching the train back to Aix.

A couple of days before my return to Canada Heather's children, Briana, Tait and Amelie as well as Tait's wife Sego and daughter Leo arrived so I met them all for the first time. It was great! After I left they all went to Nantes for Leopoldine's baptism.
Now I'm home until my return to France in mid September. Keep tuned.New apartment in Aix-en-Provence, 2011#5jpg
